Ver eBook. Patricia Monaghan. This exciting project brings together decades of study about mythology with one seeker's circuambulation through the landscape of Ireland, all described with a poet's voice. Pat Monaghan has studied and taught many integrated studies in poetry, science, mythology, feminist spirituality, environmental studies, chaos theory, and religion.

All of these disciplines inform her writing, but none distract from the poetic story-telling or the mystical lore she encounters and then conveys. Her journey takes her to a churchyard with a fountain representing St. Bridget, perhaps a Christian representation of the Celtic goddess of water, fire, and transformation, called Brigit. Monaghan describes spiral petroglyphs and ancient sacred caves, bogs and woods where fairies have played their tricks on humans, and water falls that became sacred spots.

The stories instruct and teach, as Monaghan points to ways that these myths still reveal the truths of human life, and the contradictions of love and hate, mother and seductress, harmony and struggle that are embodied in women's lives -- in all of human existence. Red Clocks: A Novel

It is possible to view this statement of intent as a soaring moment of modern literature — one that deserves to be filmed on 70mm, accompanied by a Hans Zimmer score, the scene building to a freeze-frame on the face of the resolute young man who will go on to become a globally celebrated Nobel Laureate. Such triumphalism would be reductive, though, given that Istanbul is a book about boredom, inertia, and huzun , the Turkish word for melancholy, which Pamuk presents as a key characteristic of his city, infecting all its residents; and also, that a running theme of his work is the frustration inherent in being a serious writer — the obsessive need to transform experiences into words, set against the impossibility of doing this to full satisfaction. One way in which he has dealt with this theme is to scrape away at the nature of storytelling, often using sly, self-referential devices to make the reader wonder how much a story can be trusted.

Alfred A. A sense of place animates many novelists, but few more than Orhan Pamuk, for whom personal geography is artistic destiny. In the former, Oedipus unwittingly murders his father; in the latter, the father, Rostam, unknowingly kills his son, Sohrab. The Sophocles tale not only comes out of the Western canon but its notion of the headstrong individualist who probes and questions and tempts fate is convenient shorthand for the would-be tradition-killers of Western modernity.

Woman in Red

Even though I LOVE to read , I am not one of those folks you'll see on the bus with book in hand , in the grocery store check-out line flipping pages, or waiting in the car for hubby to return something in the hardware store with my nose in a book. I'd like to be one of those people , but Truth is , I am not one to carry more than my purse , which is not large enough for one more thing , let alone a book. I'm not someone who wants to wrap an arm around a book -bookmark included , of course - and the MUST HAVE reading glasses , and carry them along with a purse, that won't hold one more thing, over my shoulder.

Ro, a history teacher, has a father in a retirement home in Florida and a brother who died of a heroin overdose. Susan, a mother, raises two children in the house she grew up in.

An archetype, as Mark Twain might have observed, is nothing but a stereotype with a college education. Where modernists and postmodernists boldly plunder the collective treasuries of myth, legend, fairy tales, and art for their own idiosyncratic purposes, commercially minded writers replicate formulaic situations, characters, and plots in order to appeal to a wide audience. We get very short chapters and a preponderance of single-sentence paragraphs, in cinematic present-tense prose that seems to teeter breathlessly on stiletto heels:. I shrivel against the glass, wilt there in the cold.
