This Bridge Called My Back is a gift of wisdom, of strength, of womanhood. As Gloria Anzaldua puts it in her foreword: "Haven't we always borne jugs of water, children, poverty? Why not learn to bear baskets of hope, love, self-nourishment and to step lightly? Tell the Publisher! I'd like to read this book on Kindle Don't have a Kindle? Amazon App. Customer reviews. I have a few books on my shelf that are related to the diversity struggle, but none dive into the topic of women and culture like this one. The voices are raw and full of pain and power.

It is a must-have for anyone working in the field of diversity or living in a diverse world yes, that means it is a must for everyone. This collection is so brilliant and eye-opening. It provides insight into the individual lives of women under the demographics of sexual and racial minority. As a white, lower-middle-class woman, I haven't experienced the complex webs woven by the intersectionalities of oppression these writers face.

On one last note, I'd like to stress that the reader consider the historic context these women were writing in. It is important to understand that in the 70's and 80's, women of various minorities were not given a share of the Second-Wave stage in the feminist and women's movements.

I would argue that we still shortchange these women even today. Their words may come off as irrationally angry, blaming, or even hyperbolic; but if you imagine the silence these intelligent, artistic women had to endure for most of their lives, you can certainly sympathize with their heightened emotions. One person found this helpful. My book got borrowed so I went online to get another. And I still can't believe it is out of print when there is so much energy and money put into so much drivvle.

But this!!! We are a family who first only knew each other in our dreams, who have come together on these pages to make faith a reality and to bring all of our selves to bear down hard on that reality. It is about physical and psychic struggle. It is about intimacy, a desire for life between all of us, not settling for less than freedom even in the most private aspects of our lives. A total vision. For the women in this book, I will lay my body down for that vision.

That is that white feminists, like white boys and black boys, are threatened by us. Did you ever read my words, or did you merely finger through them for quotations which you thought might valuably support an already-conceived idea concerning some old and distorted connection between us? This is not a theoretical question. What is the theory behind racist feminism? They express anger at us for not seeing the light. That is another aspect of how they carry on their racism.

You can certainly be concerned as we are living here this summer in Boston when one Black man after another ends up dead. Gloria, the facilitator, Gloria the mediator, straddling the walls between abysses. What am I? A third world lesbian feminist with Marxist and mystic leanings. They would chop me up into little fragments and tag each piece with a label.

First published in by Persephone Press. The book centers on the experiences of women of color and emphasizes the points of what is now called intersectionality within their multiple identities, [3] challenging white feminists who made claims to solidarity based on sisterhood. It has become "one of the most cited books in feminist theorizing" emphasis in original. Though other published writings by women of color existed at the time of This Bridge' s printing, many scholars and contributors to This Bridge agree that the bringing together of writing by women of color from diverse backgrounds in one anthology made This Bridge unique and influential. Barbara Smith , a contributor, wrote that black, Native American, Asian American, and Latina women "were involved in autonomous organization at the same time that we [were] beginning to find each other. In addition to providing the framework for new activist-based coalitions, This Bridge has had a considerable impact upon the world of academia for its linking of feminism, race, class, and sexuality. It also brought "an intellectual framework" of identities based on race and ethnicity to lesbian and gay studies. She describes how the anthology "has allowed her to offer global perspectives on issues of race, gender, ethnicity, and power against the now antiquated white feminists' utopian ideal of universal sisterhood. Through questioning the existence of objective "truth" as separate from human construction, and through an analysis of language that acknowledges deep contextual and historical meanings, she highlights the intentions of This Bridge to challenge the forces that put all feminists into one category, as well as the oppositional thinking that makes differences hierarchical instead of inter-related and interdependent.

Not so, say the authors, who spent 18 months working with a global consulting firm that wanted to know why it had so few women in positions of power. Women were held back because they were encouraged to take accommodations, such as going part-time and shifting to internally facing roles, which derailed their careers.
