Residing 3, metres above sea level in a research station that, to put it mildly, has seen better days, Revutaite quietly examines the changes caused by the outside world — invisible to most, but not to someone who knows where to look. A voluntary Robinson Crusoe with only two playful pets to call her Friday, hers is a life punctuated by routine and overwhelming silence. Although it may seem that not much has changed since those first visitors set up their camps in the Tian Shan mountains, this is clearly not the case. One look at the melting ice on the surface makes us realise that much. The world sales are handled by UKU Films.

Woman and the Glacier

At a research outpost high up in the mountains of Kazakhstan, a Lithuanian glaciologist has lived for more than 30 years, measuring shifts in the frozen landscape around her and sending her findings back to a control station in Almaty. It is a fata morgana. I saw that she was very strong and the mountains are a very fragile system.

This uncommon documentary portrait takes us to the Kazakh part of the Tian Shan mountains where a small glaciological station stands at the base of the Tuiuksu glacier, altitude 3, meters. Here, in a land of silence untroubled by historical events, lives a loner scientist who has dedicated her life to monitoring the climatic pulse of the planet. Here, cut off from civilization, we meet a woman who has voluntarily cast herself into isolation for 30 long years in order to dedicate her life to monitoring the climatic pulse of the planet.

A Lithuanian scientist records the shrinking Toyuksu glacier above Almaty, Kazakhstan, and, from her unrivalled perspective, bears witness to the onslaught of climate change. Life at 3,m is one of solitude, where capricious winds whip four seasons past in a day, affording the hours an elasticity that is anchored only by the rising and setting of the sun. In Almaty, I wanted to go on a similar journey, unaware that when I reached my destination, I would meet Revutaite. During the minute drive out of the city, I watched as great concrete hulks of Soviet-era architecture surrendered to unforgiving alpine inclines, until the road turned to rock.

Living with Revutaite in the solitude she has chosen for herself, the two animals only have each other. The solemn silence of the mountains is punctuated sparingly by the music of a man far, far below, playing a traditional instrument. Since embarking on his creative activities in the last years of the Soviet Empire, he has made 14 films as an independent filmmaker and producer.
